Katie and I just wanted to update everyone on how things are going.

Initially Sylvie was ready to go home on Wednesday, but Katie wasn't due to low blood H&H. It was a good thing they both were not ready because now we are in Birmingham thanks to a great team of staff and doctors in Enterprise. Early Thursday morning a nursery nurse suggested a chest film to rule out any aspiration from her recurrent spitting up. Her pediatrician cleared that as a problem but ordered an additional film because he didn't see any air in her abdomen. The second film revealed a problem in her intestines characterized by a "double bubble". It is called duodenal atresia and basically is an obstruction. Her doctor then called Children's Hospital and they accepted her as a patient. Katie was discharged very anemic, but is doing good.

Sylvie got to take her first airplane ride via a King Air and the children's critical care unit that day around 12:30PM. She arrived at the Birmingham NICU and was immediately checked over in full. Their tests confirmed what the Enterprise doctors suggested before we even could get to Birmingham. She is stable and seems to be taking this much better than we are. Happily she is probably one of the least sick up here. Which also means she is near the last in line for definitive treatment.

We have not talked to her doctors yet, but expect a surgery by late Saturday to remove the affected area of her intestines and attach the two clear ends to each other. We have been told various recovery lengths from 2 weeks to over a month even if she does really well.

I'll post more late this evening. For now please keep Sylvie in your prayers.
